The Quiet Man Distillery

Sadly, despite the best efforts of those involved, not all Irish Whiskey Distilleries succeed.

Quiet Man Distillery in Derry is one.

Announced with great expectations to build on the historic Ebrington Square area of the city by Niche Drinks here in early 2017.

Quiet Man Spirit Business

By late 2018 the BBC were saying it was all over here.

Quiet Man BBC

It’s better to have an impossible dream than no dream at all.

Luckily for Irish Whiskey fans the Quiet Man range of whiskeys are still going strong.

I’ll drink to that!

Pearse Lyons Distillery

Opened in 2017, Pearse Lyons Distillery is not like any other distillery.

Built into the former St James Church with its surrounding graveyard the 2 slightly unusual copper pot stills take pride of place at the altar.

Lovingly restored by Deirdre Lyons, wife of the late Dr Pearse Lyons, founder of Alltech, the distillery is packed full of stories, history, culture & spirits of the alcoholic kind!

PL 3

The full range of Pearse Whiskeys are available to taste as part of the tour. Many include single malts made by the very stills, Mighty Mollie and Little Lizzie, at this fabulous distillery.

Old Carrick Mill, Monaghan

On my journeys around Ireland it always amazes me discovering new whiskey ventures.

Ventures like Old Carrick Mill in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan.

Carrick 1

Currently producing Old Carrick Mill Small Batch Irish Gin, they have installed some shiny new copper pot stills and will be distilling their own whiskey soon!

Carrick 2

They are offering fans & followers the opportunity to purchase the first casks off the stills here.

Casks Away looks forward to tasting that matured whiskey, as well as escorting visitors to the doors of Old Carrick Mill for a tour!

Matt D’Arcy & Co, Newry

What to call your new Irish Whiskey Distillery is a question facing many budding entrants into the market.

Some opt for the geographical connection, a town name, area or region as in Connacht , Nephin or Clonakilty distilleries.

Others choose a family link as in Pearse Lyons or Teeling distilleries.

Then there is the rich historical vein of tapping into Ireland’s bountiful distilling past such as Roe & Co.

Matt 12

Or in this instance, Matt D’Arcy & Co.

Matt D’Arcy & Co were a whiskey company that traded in Newry many moons ago.

A new group of entrepreneurs have revived the name.

Matt 13

Planning permission has been granted to bring back whiskey distillation to Newry.

Casks Away welcomes this exciting development and looks forward to escorting guests to the door of this fabulous distillery when built.

Nephin Distillery

Nestled under the mighty bulk of Nephin Mountain which rears up behind the County Mayo village of Laherdane, Nephin Whiskey Distillery is taking shape.

Unlike other distilleries Nephin Whiskey will not be releasing any sourced malt before their own is ready.

Nephin 2

They do have a shop in the village however selling branded product where you can learn all about Nephin Whiskey.

Nephin 3

And you can visit their sister company of Nephin Cooperage making the casks for the upcoming distillate in nearby Foxford town.

They will also be using locally grown barley to make that spirit.

Like all good things, Nephin Whiskey will not be rushed.

Casks Away looks forward to tasting that Nephin Whiskey when it’s good and ready!

Midleton Distillery

The Midleton Distillery in County Cork when it started production of whiskey in 1975 marked a turning point in the fortunes of Irish Whiskey.

The New Midleton Distillery, as it was known, replaced the Old Midleton Distillery of the 1800’s which now houses the visitors centre.

It also concentrated the entire production of whiskey in Ireland under one roof (Bushmills being in Northern Ireland) with the amalgamation of Jamesons, Powers and Cork Distillers businesses in the newly formed Irish Distillers.

DSCF9150 email

The combined facility concentrated on promoting (rather ironically given the opposition to ‘Silent Whisky‘) the Jameson blended whiskey which slowly turned the decline of Irish Whiskey into a rebirth which is still growing today.

All Jameson, Powers, Paddy, Spot Whiskey, Redbreast, Midleton Whiskey and the exciting Method and Madness ranges of Irish Whiskey are made at Midleton.

They also provide the spirit to many third party brands.

A visit to the distillery is a must for any fan of Irish Whiskey and Casks Away is ready to take you there!

Micil Distillery

The chance to visit a sixth generation Connemara Poitín maker at work in his distillery in the City of Tribes that is Galway is a unique experience.

Micil Distillery has concentrated on producing that pure Irish spirit known as poitín.

Micil 2

Poitín is essentially unaged whiskey.

It was (and still is) produced illegally for many years. Thankfully Pádraic is the first of those six generations where you can see and taste this historically fine spirit without fear of prosecution!

Micil 1

Tasting tours are available at the micro distillery in the Oslo Bar in Galway’s popular seafront suburb of Salthill.

Casks Away looks forward to delivering you to the door of this uniquely Irish Distillery.

A gin still is already in production in the town making the popular Sling Shot Gin for the company by their Master Distiller Claire.

Lough Ree 1

Offering a ‘buy your own cask’ programme to have one of Lough Ree’s first Single Pot Still Whiskeys when they come off the stills, the new distillery have ambitious plans.
